Conversation is the name of the game during the first date and sometimes, finding a topic that suits both first-timers can be difficult. However, finding the right topic or conversation starter can easily lead to a smooth first date, a second date or even a potential new love interest. On the other hand, finding the wrong topic or conversation starter could do just as much damage as the opposing. You want to get personal, but not too personal -scaring away someone with the deep and darkest details in your life! If you’re having a hard time in the ice-breaking department, here’s a list of topics you’ll definitely want to stay away from on your next date!

  • Exes - Most people don’t want to hear about the last person you dated, especially on a first date! They’re your ex for a reason! Leave them in the past so you can focus on what’s in front of you!
  • Me, Me, Me - Of course you want to talk about yourself on a first date but leave room for the other person to do the same. It can be taken as inconsiderate if all you do is discuss yourself.
  • Family Drama - Briefly discussing your relationship with family may go well on the first date but once you start discussing the family drama, it’s over with! Save the drama for your mama!
  • Sex - It’s okay to talk sex on the first date but keep it classy! You don’t want the person you’re dating to think you’re only in it for one thing!
  • Money - Finances can be a stressful topic that can make people uncomfortable during a date! Save the money talk for when you’re a couple!
  • Too Much Info - As stated before, revealing too much on the first date can scare someone away. You want to make the person you’re dating comfortable while getting to know you!
  • “We and us” - It’s a first date! Let’s focus on getting to know each other as individuals before using the “we” word!
